Little Grebe Cotabato (Tachybaptus ruficollis cotabato)

The Little Grebe Cotabato is a small uncommon water bird which is around 10 inches in size and is considered to be the smallest duck-like bird in the country. It is a Philippine Bird Endemic to Mindanao and is one of the 9 (nine) subspecies of the Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) currently recognized and is separated principally by size and coloration. It is under the Podicipediformes Order and Podicipedidae Family with a Protonum of Podiceps ruficollis cotabato.
The Little Grebe Cotabato with the scientific name of Tachybaptus ruficollis cotabato have a pointed bill, rufous-colored neck, cheeks and flanks, and bright yellow gape. It is best describe as an excellent swimmer and diver which uses the vegetation skillfully as its hiding place. It will submerge when threatened and/or to catch food and will eventually emerge from a distance of 3 to 5 meters. Hence, the name derived.
